The History of Barn Doors
Barn doors were typically found in an agricultural setting, on a separate building, set apart from the main residence. Barn doors were originally built to allow for farmers to shelter their livestock, farming tools, machines and livestock food into a sheltered area..AKA the barn.
Barn Door Design Past and Present
Barn doors swing out wide allowing for maximum space inside of the barn. The doors were typically built from a scrap plywood, wood composite and then re-enforced with 2x4 or similar wood. This is where the "X" looking typical barn door came from that we see today.
About Barn Door Hardware
Barn door hardware was used to secure the barn door as well as add additional re-enforcements to the hinges. In older barns, the old hinges were too insecure and insignificant to hold the barn doors up alone and allow the massive doors to move like they needed to.
Hinge straps were added to the barn door to give the door more stability.
Barn Door Hardware is now replicated to look like it is affixed to the barn door hinges, but they are typically not an actual hinge bound decorative strap.
Barn Door Installation
Barn door hardware is mounted with screws directly on the barn door to replicate old barn door hardware. It is usually available in an oil rubbed bronze, a flat black or a brown rust finish.
